Clan Des Obeaux will not go back to Cheltenham
Trainer Paul Nichols has ruled out another attempt at the Cheltenham Gold Cup for Clan Des Obeaux in 2021.
The eight-year-old had a disappointing run in this year’s edition of the prestigious race, only placing eighth out of 12 runners. Al Boum Photo claimed the race for the second year running with Clan languishing 17 lengths behind. Now, Nicholls has already ruled out another go in the Gold Cup and has earmarked other potential destinations for his charger. ‘We are not going to go to the Gold Cup next year. We will stick to going right-handed,’ Nicholls said.‘We won’t even consider him as a Gold Cup horse next year. We can do better if we place him right. He obviously doesn’t like it around Cheltenham. ‘Next season it will be Down Royal [for the Champion Chase in November], the King George, then Punchestown – and he might have something else in between Kempton and Punchestown.’
