Put The Kettle On claims Arkle glory

Connections praised the durability of Put The Kettle On after the six-year-old claimed the Racing Post Arkle on day one of the Cheltenham Festival.

Sent off at 16/1, the daughter of Stowaway was not tipped to pull up any trees but claimed the spoils when beating Fakir D’Oudairies by one-and-a-half lengths.

Rouge Vif was third ahead of Global Citizen but it was Put The Kettle On that had everyone talking after the contest.

With Aidan Coleman in the plate, the mare remained handy throughout and managed to see off the challenge of Joseph O’Brien’s Fakir D’Oudairies up the famous Cheltenham hill.

Coleman was understandably stoked at the result and felt his mount always had enough in her to win the race.

‘All the way I absolutely was having some craic – then turning in, I was going to be sick if I got beaten,’ he said.

‘She’s a good mare – I turned off the bend and gave her a kick down to the second last and she absolutely lifted into the middle of it and I thought ‘brilliant, we’re away now’.

‘Then I was just praying.

If she’d have got beat she’d have been very unlucky, but she’s a very good mare.

‘ De Bromhead echoed those sentiments, adding: ‘It’s amazing, brilliant, absolutely delighted for the guys.

She’s such a tough mare.’
