Teal ponders Tip Two Win’s future

Connections of Tip Two Win are to discuss the four-year-old’s future after he suffered a setback that prevented him from running in France last month.

The Dark Angel colt has been restricted to just two starts this term, but trainer Roger Teal felt he was coming back to his best before he suffered an over-reach that caused him to miss his latest intended engagement.

Teal and owner Anne Cowley have to decide whether to keep last year’s 2000 Guineas runner-up in training in 2020, or to retire him to stud if the right opportunity arose.

“It’s been a frustrating year with Tip, obviously,” said the Hungerford trainer.

“It’s been a stop-start campaign.

He was going to run in France a few weeks ago, and he just over-reached on his last bit of work – and it set us back again.

“We’re pondering what to do with him at the moment.

“Our season’s over this year.

If he stays in training then we’ll have to concentrate on next year with him.

It’s something Anne (Cowley) and I have got to have a chat about, and see what we’re going to do with him.

Tip Two Win retains a zest for racing, but Teal confirms retirement is nonetheless a “possibility”.

“He’s fine in himself,” he added.

“We’d just got him back to where we wanted him.

He was working with his old zest, so we were confident going to France – then he just rapped his joint on the day before he was supposed to go.

“He’s still got his old character and the enthusiasm for it.

It’s just been frustrating.

“If we were to keep him in training we’d like to give him a long rest, just to let everything settle down and re-group and start again.

“Retirement is a possibility, but it’s not for definite.

If the right job came up for him at stud we might be tempted to retire him.”
