Elarqam set for York tilt
Elarqam looks set to run in the Sky Bet York Stakes next month following his return to form over recent months.
The son of Frankel was the hot favourite to win the Group Two contest last year, but he ended up finishing a close third behind Thundering Blue. That race epitomised what was an underwhelming three-year-old campaign for Elarqam, but he has returned to form during 2019, following up his victory in the Listed Festival Stakes at Goodwood, with a third-place finish in the Wolferton Stakes at Royal Ascot earlier this month. A return to York now appears to be on the agenda for the Mark Johnston-trained colt, with Angus Gold, racing manager to owner-breeder Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, confirming their intentions. ‘I thought he ran nearly his best race at Ascot,’ Gold said.‘I would think the York Stakes is eminently possible. That is exactly the sort of race he would be suited to. I think that is the right level – so with any luck, hopefully we will go back there.’
