Withold out of Nothumberland Plate

Last year’s winner Withold has been withdrawn from Saturday’s Northumberland Plate due to a minor lung infection.

The Tony Bloom-owned six-year-old, who followed up his 2017 Cesarewitch success with victory in the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle last summer, has picked up a lung problem and trainer Roger Charlton says he will not be risked.

Withold suffered a broken blood vessel on his Australian debut in the Geelong Cup last October and Charlton insists they will not take any chances this weekend.

‘Withhold has been declared a non runner in the Northumberland Plate.

He has a low grade infection in his lungs,’ Charlton wrote on Twitter.

‘It has been well documented that he broke a blood vessel in Melbourne and an infection increases the risk of it happening again.

His welfare is hugely important to us.

‘ Bloom will now hope Stratum shines for him in the race, while the likes of Gibbs Hill, Proschema and King’s Advice are all also fancied to run well.
