Pinatubo shines at Royal Ascot

Charlie Appleby’s Pinatubo made a huge statement on the final day of Royal Ascot after he won the Chesham Stakes in fine style.

The two-year-old maintained his unbeaten record on Saturday after outclassing 5/4 favourite Lope Y Fernandez.

Pinatubo, who is owned by Goldolphin, made his debut at Wolverhampton on May 10 before winning at Epsom Downs on May 31.

Under James Doyle, Pinatubo won by three-and-a-quarter lengths at Ascot, while Lope Y Fernandez was a clear second ahead of Highland Chief in third.

Appleby is now planning for another run in the coming weeks, with Goodwood and the Curragh on the agenda.

He said: ‘I’m delighted – he came here with the right credentials.

He surprised me first time up when he won at Wolverhampton, but learnt plenty.

We went to Epsom confident on the back of that and he showed an impressive turn of foot that day.

‘I was confident throughout the race today that we were going to get the business done.

‘We’ll step up in class now, obviously.

Something like the Vintage Stakes (at Goodwood) could be for him, the way he travels.

The National Stakes (at the Curragh) wouldn’t be out of the question later.’
