Blue Point secures Royal Ascot double

Royal Ascot hero retired

Blue Point produced his second gutsy run of the week to win the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and secure a Royal Ascot double.

The five-year-old defended his King’s Stand crown on Tuesday and connections believed he was fit enough to run again this week.

Charlie Appleby’s stable star went into the race as the 6/4 favourite and he used pacesetter Kachy to dramatic effect during the race.

Jockey James Doyle timed his approach perfectly and they did enough to hold off Dream Of Dreams in the closing stages.

Blue Point becomes the first horse since Choisir in 2003 to win both races at the same meeting and Doyle was delighted with his mount.

He said: ‘That was pretty special – he gave me an unbelievable feeling.

I said to Charlie after his last bit of work before the King’s Stand that I thought he was probably one of the quickest horses I’ve ever ridden, and he certainly is that.

‘It got a little bit hairy late on, Kachy went a hell of a pace and this fella is so genuine all he wanted to do was go and chase him down.

I couldn’t restrain him any more – I’ve never met a horse as tough as this.

It’s unbelievable.

‘He’s a real star and he has certainly stamped his stallion credentials now.

It earmarks him as a real champion.’
