Dettori guides Anapurna to Oaks success
Frankie Dettori steered Anapurna to a narrow victory in the Investec Oaks at Epsom on Friday.
In a keenly contested race, it looked like the Aidan O’Brien-trained Pink Dogwood had timed her push for the finish perfectly with Ryan Moore in the saddle, but Anapurna was able to close down the leader before claiming the victory by a neck. The win marks Dettori’s fifth success in the Oaks, while trainer John Gosden has now won the Group One on three occasions – the duo having previously teamed up for Enable’s victory in 2017. Dettori was certainly delighted by his latest success, believing it is a testament to his longevity, as his first Oaks success came aboard Balanchine 25 years ago. ‘There was a small gap, I thought I wasn’t going to get it, but she’s very courageous – brilliant,’ Dettori told ITV Racing after the race.‘I was getting him (Moore) and then in the last 30 yards I got him. Beautiful. ‘I absolutely love it. My first one (Oaks on Balanchine) was 25 years ago and I’m still here.’
