O’Brien upbeat on Iridessa’s chances
Trainer Joseph O’Brien believes Iridessa has a ‘live chance’ of winning Sunday’s Qipco 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket.
The daughter of 2013 Derby winner Ruler Of The World had an impressive season last year, beginning with a maiden win at Killarney and ending with a comprehensive victory in the Fillies’ Mile, which is run over the same course and distance as the 1,000 Guineas. Iridessa also impressed on her seasonal reappearance in the 1,000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown earlier this month, recording a third-place finish, and O’Brien is upbeat on her chances of winning the second Classic of the season on Sunday. ‘Iridessa is in good shape and we’re very happy with her,’ the trainer was quoted as saying by the Racing Post. ‘It’s nice to go there with what we think is a live chance.‘She’s been working well and had a nice run on her first start of the year. Hopefully we get a nice draw and we see what happens. I’m really looking forward to the race. ‘ O’Brien, who has trained a Melbourne Cup winner, a Cheltenham Festival winner and an Irish Classic winner by the age of just 25, will certainly be hoping that Iridessa delivers on Sunday, as he is looking to add a British Classic success to his ever-growing list of achievements.
