Defoe heading back to Newmarket
Defoe will be given the chance to make it back-to-back wins in the Roaring Lion Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket, according to Roger Varian.
The five-year-old returned to action last weekend in the John Porter – a race he won last season along with the Jockey Club stakes in his first two starts – but could only finish fourth. Despite that effort, Defoe, who was gelded in the off-season, will get the chance to win successive Jockey Club’s on 4 May and then his handlers will make a decision on what lies ahead in his future. Varian said: ‘He ran a good race at Newbury, but maybe he just needed the run a little bit. ‘He is entered in the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket. He won the race last year and that will be the priority at the moment. ‘We will see where we go from there.’
