Monalee cruises home at Gowran Park
Henry De Bromhead admits he was delighted with Monalee after he outclassed his rivals to win the Red Mills Chase at Gowran Park.
The eight-year-old finished second to Cheltenham Gold Cup favourite Presenting Percy in the RSA Chase last year but he proved he could shine at this year’s Festival. Presenting Percy was withdrawn from this weekend’s race on Friday, meaning Monalee went off as the even-money favourite. Jockey Rachael Blackmore had no problems while on his back for the first time as they powered home to beat Anibale Fly, Edwulf and Killultagh Vic. De Bromhead is now considering his plans ahead of Cheltenham after his ‘brilliant’ performance. He told reporters: ‘He jumped brilliant and Rachael was super on him. ‘I’m delighted to win it, he’s giving away 7lb to a couple of them there. It’s great to win this race and I’m delighted with him. ‘It was great to get a run into him on that ground today. Obviously we’ll head for Cheltenham and we’ll see. ‘He’s in the Ryanair and the Gold Cup and we’ll work it all out between now and then.’
