Whelan facing spell on the sidelines
Jockey Trevor Whelan won’t be riding for an unspecified amount of time after he suffered a fractured ankle on Saturday.
Whelan, better known in the National Hunt world, made the trip to Chester this weekend to partner the David Loughnane-trained Rockesbury in the ESL Group Novice Stakes. The experienced jockey, who has been busy on the Flat during the summer, produced a good ride to guide the three-year-old gelding to victory, beating Alkhawaneej Boy by a nose.
However, in a very unlucky break, Whelan was unseated after crossing the line and, after further medical examination, he has confirmed on Twitter he has suffered a bad injury.
He tweeted: ‘Fractured ankle @ChesterRaces after winning the race, least it won.
‘
It is yet to be confirmed how long Whelan will be out of action for.
