Gosden hails Dettori after Cambridgeshire triumph
John Gosden felt Frankie Dettori guided Wissahickon to Cambridgeshire Handicap glory with a ‘clever ride’ on Saturday afternoon.
The three-year-old landed the spoils with a three-and-three-quarter-length victory over Mordin at Newmarket, retuning at 11/1 under the great Italian. It continued a love affair with the race for the trainer as Gosden claimed it for the fourth time, with the son of Tapit securing his fourth victory of the season from five runs.
Wissahickon romped clear with two furlongs to go to, with Mordin, Via Via and Sabador trailing in his wake.
Gosden was full of praise for the jockey and outlined plans for his charge.
‘Frankie said they went too hard,’ he said. ‘He said he dropped the bit on him, let him coast for three furlongs and then picked him up again. It was a very clever ride.
‘That is experience. There is no other word for it. Full marks to the jockey.
‘I think we will have to go for a Listed race now. He will be fine but he likes this ground. If it is a wet autumn, he wouldn’t be happy.’
