Group One glory for Appleby in Australia
Trainer Charlie Appleby was left delighted as his horse Jungle Cat won the Group One Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday.
The six-year-old headed Down Under after securing three successive victories in Dubai earlier this year, including in the Al Quoz Sprint on World Cup night.Jockey James Doyle had been in the saddle for two of the three races and was once again able to guide the Irish horse home in Australia after they cut down Dollar For Dollar during the latter stages to win by a short head.
Appleby was full of praise for both horse and jockey after the race and believes the victory justified their decision to head to Australia.
‘It’s great to have a Group One (winner) here and it was a fantastic ride by James,’ Appleby told Racing.com.
‘It was always our plan after the Al Quoz to come here, as there are not many Group Ones in Europe over seven furlongs and the ground is always on the easy side in France, where we would have potentially taken him (Prix de la Foret).
‘The conditions were always going to suit him here, back on a sound surface.’
