Magical afternoon for Dettori at Doncaster

Town Moor double headed by smart-looking prospect.

Magical Morning looked a bright prospect when defying a 7lb penalty in the Follow At The Races On Twitter Novice Stakes at Doncaster.

The John Gosden-trained colt was always to the fore under a positive ride from Frankie Dettori and pulled out more when challenged to run out a ready winner.

Sent off the 11-8 favourite, the son of Muhaarar was briefly headed four furlongs out by Vega Magic on the other side of the track, but regained the lead two furlongs from home and was three-quarters of a length too strong for his main market rival Hydros at the line.

Dettori was pleased with the horse’s performance.

“He was still babyish at Yarmouth and we thought this was a good opportunity. It’s hard to win with a penalty, but he did it in good style,” he told Sky Sports Racing.

“The ground was plenty quick enough for him. We got away with it. He’s got a bit of a round knee action and I think good ground would be best, but he’s definitely a horse with a future. I wish I’d had a bit of company just to teach him something, but he won well.

“It was a good second start of the season for him.”

Winter Thorn was disqualified from fourth place after jockey Jack Mitchell failed to weigh in. Mitchell was suspended for three days and ordered to forfeit his riding fee.

Dettori completed a double by scoring on his only other ride Harrovian (11-8 favourite), also for Gosden, in the Sky Sports Racing Handicap.
