Lord Campari claims eyecatching Newbury success

Varian runners makes amends for pre-race mishap.

Lord Campari redeemed himself with trainer Roger Varian after running out a stylish winner in the first division of the It’s Not Rocket Science With MansionBet Novice Stakes at Newbury.

Having stood on the Newmarket handler’s foot during the preliminaries, the son of Kingman, who finished sixth on his debut at Sandown last year, more than made up for it on his seasonal comeback in the mile contest.

Travelling powerfully throughout, the 15-8 shot quickly put the race to bed when sent on, crossing the line four and three-quarter lengths clear of favourite Tsar.

Varian said: “He jumped on my foot when I was saddling him, so he has redeemed himself well. The win has made me feel better.

“We liked him last year but he is a big, raw horse. He travelled nicely and quickened well. It was a nice seasonal debut. We will see how he is in the morning then take it from there.”

Mubtasimah got her career back on track by gaining some valuable black-type in the Watch And Bet With MansionBet At Newbury Maggie Dickson Fillies’ Stakes.

Racing in Listed company for the first time, the William Haggas-trained four-year-old made an immediate impact with a taking success in the seven-furlong affair to give James Doyle his second winner on the card following the earlier success of Fortune And Glory.

Hitting the front over a furlong out, the 11-4 favourite moved through the gears before passing the post two lengths clear of runner-up Miss Celestial.

Maureen Haggas, wife of the winning trainer, said: “She did it really well. On this sort of ground, seven furlongs is probably her perfect trip. She is probably better with a bit more dig in the ground.

“It is great to win a Listed race with and that was her main goal. I am sure she will be joining Sheikh Juma’s broodmare band when the time is right.

“The lad who rides her at home has done a great job as she was very settled and relaxed and she arrived here in good shape.”

Fortune And Glory (18-5) got the ball rolling for Doyle when prevailing by a length and a quarter in the Watch And Bet With MansionBet At Newbury Handicap.

Joe Tuite, winning trainer, said: “This is his grade, the race panned out perfectly for him. We did the same as last year, won on the all-weather and then came here and won.

“He had a few little issues after he won last year, but he’s in better nick this year and I think, if we get lucky, he’ll win again.”

Morisco took a step up in trip in his stride to make a triumphant return to action in the It’s Not Rocket Science With MansionBet Handicap.

The Tom Dascombe-trained three-year-old added to wins at Newcastle and Ayr last season, gained either side of finishing fifth in the Acomb, to make a winning start over a mile and a quarter.

Held up early on, the 100-30 shot swept to the front two furlongs out before finding plenty for pressure to hold off It’s Good To Laugh by a length and a quarter.

Richard Kingscote, winning jockey, said: “We always liked this horse and we thought he would do well this year.

“He has obviously progressed and he went about that really nicely. I was really pleased with the way he picked up.

“Last year a couple of times he was a bit keen, but that was much better and he settled nicely and got into a good rhythm.

“The boss was confident he would get the trip and he was right.”
