‘Brilliant’ Enable retains King George crown
Enable held off a strong challenge from Crystal Ocean to make history in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Qipco Stakes.
The five-year-old made it 11 consecutive victories but had to show real character to live up to the hype at Ascot on Saturday. Frankie Dettori has built up a fantastic relationship with the John Gosden-trained filly since they were first partnered together in May 2017. He used his experience to hold Enable back in the early stages before kicking on to challenge Crystal Ocean on the home straight. Dettori’s charge to the front was timed perfectly as Enable won her duel by a nose to make it back-to-back victories in the showpiece event.‘I’m exhausted, emotionally exhausted too. I’m lost for words. She is loved by everyone,’ said Dettori. ‘She’s brilliant. The second [Crystal Ocean] is a great horse, I knew he was the one to beat. We gave the public what they came to see, and they got a fantastic horse race.’
