When Hamdan Al Maktoum bought SHAWAAMEKH as a yearling he must have had great expectations and sent the horse to be trained at John Gosden’s Newmarket stable.

Things musn’t have quite worked out and the horse, already gelded, was sold on and went to the care of Declan Carroll in Malton a year ago. The son of Irish Derby runner-up Born To Sea can add to the winning earnings gained at Catterick last Autumn by winning the Watch Racing TV In Stunning HD Handicap today and can pay back another £4,000 of his £25,000 price.

He has run just six times in total and produced good figures when finishing second to Saison’s D’Or in a seven furlong handicap at this venue last week. That horse had won his previous with the third horse, Kupa River franking the form in a good time at Musselburgh next time out.

His sire fathered top miler Sea of Grace and his dam won over a mile at Salisbury so the distance should be in his favour. DUBAI ACCLAIM and REDARNA are next best on BTO ratings and ZODIAKOS is being backed, but at the general 3/1 it could be a case of Shawaamekh the way home.
