Security team ponder appeal
Maximum Security owner Gary West says he will speak with stewards before appealing the decision to disqualify the Kentucky winner.
For the first time in the race’s 145-year history, a winner was disqualified as West’s horse was found to have impeded two other horses after jumping the final hurdle at Churchill Downs. It took 22 minutes of deliberation between the stewards after the race to announce his disqualification and hand victory to the 65/1 outside shot Country House instead. West says he wants to speak to the officials to hear their reasons behind the disqualification before potentially launching an appeal, but could have to wait until Thursday when the next scheduled meeting at the track is. ‘We wanted to have the stewards explain to us what they saw and show us on their video the pictures of exactly what they saw, and they refused to allow us to do that,’ West told the Associated Press.‘That was really pretty bush league, because there is no rule that they can’t show the film to the owner and trainer that got disqualified for the first time in the history of the Kentucky Derby other than they aren’t working today, or Monday, or Tuesday or Wednesday.’
