Walsh, the son of trainer and former champion amateur jockey Ted, has decided to call it a day after 24 years in the saddle. He turned pro after winning two Irish amateur jockeys’ titles before claiming the professional title on 11 occasions. The County Kildare native retires after winning 59 Cheltenham Festival races, including five Stayers’ Hurdles. He also won three Grand Nationals, as well as completing the quadruple of wins in the English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh Nationals in 2004. Walsh has struggled with injuries of late after two broken legs but he received a special send-off after ending his career with a win at his local track.
