Altior claims historic win
Nicky Henderson’s Altior made it a record 19 wins over fences on Saturday with victory in the Celebration Chase at Sandown Park.
Altior matched Big Buck’s 18 wins when landing the Queen Mother Champion Chase for a second time at Cheltenham last month and the nine-year-old moved clear on 19 victories with an impressive performance at Sandown. Mrs Patricia Pugh’s-owned charge landed the Celebration Chase for the third straight year when finishing two-and-a-half lengths ahead of Alan King’s Sceau Royal, who was challenging at one stage before being outclassed. Henderson expressed his delight at the win before confirming Altior will be stepped up in trip, saying the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park on Boxing Day is the intended target. ‘He told us one thing today – go further, so that is what we will do.There is not much point doing it for the Ryanair, so you have got to go King George,’ he was quoted as saying by racingpost.com. ‘How we set it up, I’m not quite sure, but we’ve got a long summer to think about that. Nico said he had to keep the revs up the whole way there. He was firing along and going a good old rattle. ‘His jumping keeps him going like that. He just keeps galloping.’
