Kemboy shines at Aintree

Mullins names strong Auteuil team

Kemboy proved he is the real deal after bouncing back from his fall at Cheltenham by winning the Betway Bowl Chase at Aintree.

Willie Mullins’ charge was expected to compete for the places during the Cheltenham Gold Cup last month. However, he fell at the first fence after making a rare error under jockey David Mullins.

Ruby Walsh returned to the saddle for Thursday’s contest at Aintree and he gave his charge a patient ride as he beat Clan Des Obeaux, Balko Des Flos, Bristol De Mai, Road To Respect and Elegant Escape. When asked about Kemboy’s performance, Willie told reporters: ‘He never put a foot wrong, from what I could see.

‘It’s awful conditions here, and I was worried with there having been a race over fences already that the ground would have opened up and might not suit him, but he had trouble staying that trip and will get further. ‘It was bad luck that day at Cheltenham. I think he’ll be fine for Punchestown. We haven’t been too hard on him this year.’
