O’Brien reveals Mendelssohn confidence
Aidan O’Brien is confident that Mendelssohn will be ready for Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Classic after his four-race preparation.
The three-year-old won last year’s Juvenile Turf but disappointed in his first outing in America when he was tailed off in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. However, O’Brien has taken Mendelssohn back to the US for another three races since then and he has secured placed finishes in both the Travers Stakes at Saratoga and Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont. And, as they head back to Churchill Downs in Kentucky for next weekend’s $6million race, O’Brien feels Mendelssohn can deliver him a first-ever Breeders’ Cup Classic. He said: ‘Everything is good with him so far.He has had the experience. ‘It is a bit different for us than the people who are training in America. We have to try to learn what works and doesn’t work. ‘Mendelssohn has toughened up. He was very babyish but we think he is physically and mentally maturing.’
