Haggas eager to add Cambridgeshire to CV
William Haggas hopes Alfarris and Seniority can end his long wait to win the Cambridgeshire at Newmarket this Saturday.
The Somerville Lodge handler has landed plenty of valuable handicaps in his time but the Cambridgeshire is one race missing from his CV and he has sent a strong duo to HQ in the hope of ending the hoodoo.Alfarris, owned by Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, is the favourite amongst most bookmakers having already won twice this season, while Seniority was recently a winner at Goodwood.
Haggas is upbeat about the pair having kept a close eye on them recently but admits it will be a tall order given how competitive the Cambridgeshire has been previously.
‘They are a pair of good, solid older horses in good form, but it is always a competitive race and you will usually encounter a couple of blots on the handicap, so it is a tough one to win,’ said Haggas.
‘You need to stay well to win the Cambridgeshire. Alfarris is fine over a mile and a quarter, while Seniority is a winner over one mile and three furlongs, so that is a plus for them
‘We have won a few big handicaps over the years, but the Cambridgeshire is not one of them and it’s a race I’d like to add to my CV.’
