Sussex option for Circus

Circus Maximus could run in the Qatar Sussex Stakes, with connections considering supplementing him.

The three-year-old demonstrated his class last month by winning the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, proving his doubters wrong after dropping back to a mile.

He was a late entry on that occasion and it could be a similar situation for the Goodwood showpiece, which has been won by trainer Aidan O’Brien on five previous occasions.

Alan Cooper, who is the racing manager for the Niarchos family, part-owners of Circus Maximus together with Coolmore, says a run in the Sussex is being considered after proving himself over a mile in June.

‘The Sussex is still under strong consideration,’ Cooper said.

‘He doesn’t have to be supplemented until the end of next week, and Aidan will make a decision then.

The horse is in good form, he’s versatile.

‘You’d like to think he has plenty of options – but he showed at Ascot that he enjoyed a mile, so that is the plan for the moment – to go for the Sussex and then take it from there.

‘As he doesn’t have to be supplemented just yet there’s no final decision, but it looks like it’s going to be a nice race.’
