Jockey Rob Hornby was thankful to the Andrew Balding stables for providing him with another winner after riding Pivoine to success at York.

The five-year-old claimed the John Smith’s Diamond Jubilee Cup Handicap on the Knavesmire, returning at 14/1 after beating 9/2 favourite Setting Sail into second place by one length.

It was the son of Redoute’s Choice’s second triumph at the Yorkshire venue after he claimed the 2018 Sky Bet Handicap under Jason Watson 11 months ago.

Pivoine responded well when asked for more, with What’s The Story third ahead of Another Touch, while Afaak and Big Kitten were fifth and sixth respectively.

Hornby was delighted with his mount’s display and praised the Balding clan for showing faith in him over the years.

‘He likes it around here and I was just waiting to press the button as I knew he had a good turn of foot.

Conditions were perfect today,’ he told ITV Racing.

‘We came up the middle which was great for a horse who is ridden like him and I was able to make ground, while still having cover which is important for him.

‘It’s huge for me.

I started at Mr Balding’s when I was 16 and left school and all my big successes have been for the family.

It’s been a massive journey through my career and is continuing.’
