Columbus County has outside chance – Callan
Jockey Neil Callan feels Columbus County is not without hope in Sunday's BMW Hong Kong Derby 2020 despite others having more appeal.
The four-year-old will line up at an empty Sha Tin, with connections hoping to land the £2. 2m jackpot. The son of Redwood is up against a number of talented horses in the Far East showpiece, with Golden Sixty, Champion’s Way and More Than This all fancied to do well. Trained by Caspar Fownes, the gelding will need to be at his very best to claim the riches on offer although Callan seems upbeat about his chances. ‘I gave Columbus County a little canter around the track on Friday and he felt fit and healthy and looks good,’ he said.‘On ratings with the top three he has got a bit to find and though Golden Sixty is the one to beat, it isn’t the strongest year and he has a good draw in stall three. ‘I’d be very happy if we finished fourth or fifth, but I finished a close third on a big outsider last year, so just because we will be a big price doesn’t mean it isn’t doable.’
