Queally hits hurdles target at Tramore
Flat rider shows winning form over obstacles.
Tom Queally teamed up with his father, Declan, to score over hurdles at Tramore with Owenacurra Lass. Queally, who will forever be linked with Flat superstar Frankel, was having his third spin over obstacles since taking out a National Hunt licence. With rides thin on the ground on the level through the winter, Quelly returned home and rewarded punters at 9-1. He brought his mount wide into the straight in the Knockenduff Stud Maiden Hurdle and won by a length and three-quarters. “I did loads of this when I was younger,” he said. “I haven’t had the falls that a lot of my colleagues here had, so maybe I’ve gone out there a bit stupid to it. It’s nice to get a winner here.“We discussed it beforehand and felt it was best to angle out for the better ground. She’s a lovely mare and tries hard.” Queally’s brother, Declan, assistant trainer to his father, added: “I told him to get his National Hunt licence and we’d give him a couple of spins over Christmas. “He looked all right there and hasn’t lost it yet. I don’t think he’s ridden here for 17 years.”
