Goddess Can Defy The Odds In Nursery
All-Weather Return To Suit Filly
It was in late Summer and after four unsuccessful attempts at six and seven furlongs, split equally between turf and all-weather, that GODDESS OF FIRE travelled across Newmarket from Ed Dunlop’s stable to John Ryan’s yard. She is by miler Toronado but was immediately put into a mile and a quarter event by her new trainer, and, wearing cheek-pieces for the first time, got up to beat Sophar Sogood by a length and a half at Chelmsford. That horse had been first and second in his previous two runs and the third, Chateau Peapod second and third since off a mark 3lb higher. In context, there’s nothing wrong with the form. The filly then went back to turf – or mud – at Nottingham and though third of fourth was only beaten a shade over three lengths. She goes off the same mark of 55 today and the return to an artificial surface will obviously suit. The progeny of Toronado are a more than encouraging 30% on the surface, and three from 17 at the distance, whilst her trainer is a decent 15 from 115 at today’s course. Favourite GIBRALTAR is a real threat after three runs in maiden and novice events. He was doing his best work in the finish when third at Chelmsford three weeks ago and that form was given a lift when when the runner-up, Cedar Cage, won comfortably by over three lengths at Southwell this week. Recent course winner Treaty of Dingle is second favourite but goes up six pounds and a furlong, whilst EVENTFUL is being backed. At 12/1 in an eight horse field Goddess Of Fire must be worth an each-way interest. G Lees
