Five-Year-Old Ready For A Peach Of A Race
Course Winner Has Conditions just Right For Another Successful Run
Although not in the veteran category as regards age, PEACHY CARNEHAN has managed to race 63 times since his debut for his then trainer Mark Johnston in May, 2016, and has been successful eight times and placed in twice as many. He has collected gold on ground varying from all-weather, to good to soft and good to firm on turf. He has also entered the winners enclosure after competing over five, six and seven furlongs so can reasonably be described as versatile. The five-year-old contests the JPS Flooring Handicap at Newcastle this evening and has a real chance of adding to his winning tally. His latest run was here a week ago and he did really well to get to within a length of Axe Axelrod over six furlongs off a mark of 57, the same as this evening. This is just 4lb higher than the 53 he won off on turf a month ago at Leicester and that was over today’s distance of seven furlongs, perhaps his optimum now at the age of five. He has also won at the course. His Cheshire based trainer Michael Mullineaux loves a winner at the course and is three from 12 there when putting Jockey James Sullivan up; he is also in form with a winner and three places from eight runners in the last fortnight. BILLY WEDGE is favourite after a second and a win over course and distance in his last two outings. He is, however, up 5lb and the race he won recently worked out perfectly for him. Drawn on the outside of 13 runners he tracked the leaders one off the rail before taking advantage of a gap and going straight as an arrow through it. He is in the less favourable number 5 stall this evening. TOBEORNOTOBEE is being backed and has won here but over six furlongs. Still an entire, he is 3lb worse off with Peachy Carnehan for a runner-up length and a quarter beating when the latter won his Leicester race a month ago. GORGEOUS GENERAL will run well but looks and races like a sprinter. At the 7/1 offered by the exchanges and BetVictor, Peachey Carnehan looks the business. G Lees
