Mullins expects more from Melon

Trainer Willie Mullins enjoyed a one-two in the Dubai £500,000 Cesarewitch Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday.

The Irish trainer had seven runners in the race, with long-time ante-post favourite Stratum and Cheltenham Festival heroine Limini expected to be his main protagonists, but two of his other horses battled it out for victory.

Low Sun, saddled by Seamie Heffernan, and Uradel pulled clear heading into the final furlong and it was the latter that held on for his third victory in four following previous successes at Galway and the Curragh.

Mullins was delighted to secure a one-two from the race although he was concerned his leading pair would be overhauled during the closing stages.

‘I wasn’t looking at the two of those in the last furlong, I was looking at what was going to pass the two of them,’ Mullins admitted. ‘I was hoping one would hold on. I was just delighted nothing came from out the back.’

Low Sun’s form has also surprised Mullins, who confirmed the five-year-old had been on his selling list earlier in the year until he discovered his winning touch.

‘Low Sun is a real hard grafter,’ the trainer added. ‘The more we ask, the more he gives.

‘To think he was on our selling list. We had him on our selling list after Punchestown and he just kept on winning and improving.’
