Pym bids to follow Altior lead
Nicky Henderson hopes highly-rated Pym can follow in Altior’s hoofprints when he makes his eagerly-awaited hurdles debut tomorrow.
The five-year-old has been given a gradual introduction to his racing career by the champion trainer ahead of his Chepstow test. He impressed in three bumper starts but has always been thought of as a potential leading hurdle prospect and faces nine rivals for his bow overt timber in Chepstow’s opening two-mile novice event – a race won by Altior for the same owners. The Stowaway gelding is a half-brother to three winners and particularly caught the eye when scoring on his racing debut at Ayr in April over two miles on good to soft ground. Chepstow report similar conditions for Saturday’s meeting, describing the ground as good, good to soft in places following rain which should suit Henderson’s prospect. Altior was similarly campaigned in bumpers ahead of landing this race by 34 lengths on his jumping debut in 2015 and then went on to claim that season’s Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. The Seven Barrows handler hopes his young charge can follow a similar path.
He Tweeted: ‘Pym has been declared to make his hurdles debut @Chepstow Racing tomorrow in the race we won with Altior for the same owners. We’ve all had to be patient with him but hopefully it’ll be worth it!’
