New York tracks cleared to resume racing from June 1
Racing has been on hold since March.
New York governor Andrew Cuomo has given racecourses in the state clearance to resume racing behind closed doors from June 1. Racing has been suspended in New York, which encompasses tracks such as Belmont Park, Aqueduct and Saratoga, since March 19 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Belmont is the home of the Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the Triple Crown, which was scheduled to be run on June 6. Governor Cuomo has now stated tracks will be able to reopen, albeit with strict measures in place. He tweeted: “As we phase reopening we are looking for all opportunities to reopen economic activity without crowds. “For example, horse racing tracks across the state can open June 1 without fans.”
