January return for Saint
Harry Whittington says he has some January targets for Saint Calvados after his third in the Tingle Creek.
After opening his season with a win at Naas, he was 19 lengths behind the brilliant Altior at Sandown although there were signs of encouragement to take from a miserable afternoon weather-wise. Whittington is now looking ahead to the new year where Saint Calvados’ main goal will be the Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. An entry for the King George on Boxing Day has been submitted but the Wantage-handler is keen for him to step up in trip to two miles and beyond. Having come out of Saturday’s race well, Whittington says he is ready to wait until January to see his charge return to action. He said: ‘We’ll let the dust settle and have a look. There’s a Listed race over two-and-a-half at Kempton in January. ‘It will probably be a good thing to take him right-handed down in grade and then we will just take it from there.’
