Thomas focussed on big few days ahead, as Walters makes progress
Trainer and owner were involved in a helicopter crash last week.
Dai Walters is “on the road to recovery” after last week’s horrific helicopter crash in Wales, according to trainer Sam Thomas. Cheltenham Festival-winning owner Walters and Welsh Grand National-winning trainer Thomas were among five people involved in the accident on November 1. The former suffered more serious injuries than the other passengers when the crash occurred in woodland near Llanelidan, Ruthin, Denbighshire. Thomas, who trains at The Hollies Stables near Cardiff in South Wales, which Walters owns, was reluctant to talk about the crash as he prepares for a big weekend which will see him saddle four horses at the three-day Paddy Power Gold Cup meeting at Cheltenham, which starts on Friday. “The horses are running fine, but I really don’t want to talk about the incident. They are running fantastic,” said Thomas.Walters, 76, has enjoyed five top-level wins over jumps with Aintree Hurdle winner Oscar Whisky and dual Liverpool Hurdle scorer Whisper, while William Henry landed the 2019 Coral Cup at the Cheltenham Festival. He needed CPR at the scene of the accident before being taken to Glan Clwyd Hospital, but Thomas gave an upbeat report on his rehabilitation on Thursday. He said: “Dai is OK, it will be a long road back, but he will be OK. He is well on the road to recovery. “I’m fine – just keeping the show on the road. That is all we can all do. Just keep the horses in top form and keep kicking.”
A really nice performance! 👌
