Williams’ Improver To Take Featured Race
Novice Targeted At Bangor Chase
Today’s ground is soft or heavy at all three meetings and ability to go on it and stay are essential qualities to look for in trying to find in some winners. Venetia Williams has a reputation of getting horses that go on the soft and she runs COMMODORE in the Anne Duchess Of Westminster Chase, a race commemorating the owner of Arkle. The horse was bought out of France after three runs that included a win and a close second on very soft ground on his debut. He had his first race in a novice hurdle event here in November, 2017, but was pulled up after a blunder three out. The gelding then ran a couple of good races from five efforts in early 2018 but was obviously underperforming and a wind operation took place followed by an eight month break.Reappearing over fences at Warwick on New Year’s Eve, 2018, he made all, jumped well and scooted home by six lengths from Goodnight Charlie. The son of Fragrant Mix repeated the trick on soft ground at Sandown last March and has been off the track since. He is up nearly a stone today but the distance is ideal and he goes on the ground. His fitness has to be taken on trust but he has won when fresh and, significantly, trainer Williams loves this race. She has won it ln recent years with Howard’s Legacy and Summery Justice and took it last year with Yala Enki. Add to that her four from 17 win stat in the last fortnight and it is reasonable to think that Commodore swill be fit. CLASSIC BEN looks next best after a win in a Class 2 at Sandown last February. He is only up 3lb for that and might have found three miles two furlongs too far last time. ARTHUR’S GIFT and LOOKSNOWTLIKEBRIAN , ran fourth and fifth to Pop Rockstar at Carlisle last month band are both down 2lb in the handicap but Commodore looks the improver and is 9/4 with SkyBet.
