Latrobe to miss Melbourne Cup
Owner Lloyd Williams has confirmed Irish Derby winner Latrobe will not run in this year’s Melbourne Cup.
The three-year-old headed Down Under earlier this month and he was set to follow the same path as Rekindling, who won the race in 2017.Latrobe has endured a busy year, competing in six races and winning two before heading to Australia.
Connections have now decided to swerve the Melbourne Cup and Latrobe will now run in the Mackinnon Stakes over 10 furlongs instead.
Confirming plans, Williams told The Age: ‘Latrobe will not run in the Melbourne Cup.
He will be entered in the Group One 2000 metre race on the final day [of the carnival].
‘It has been decided the Cup this year at 3200 metres is too soon for him.’
