Royalty Worth The Wait At Southwell
The abilty to act on the Fibresand at Southwell is of crucial importance to winner-finding there and the progeny of Lethal Force tend to have that ability with a strike rate at the course that is 44% better than expected. A daughter of his, the Les Eyre trained QUEEN OF KALAHARI hasn’t disrupted the trend, having run 2nd, 5th and more recently 1st in her efforts at the track. Wearing cheek-pieces for just the fourth time, she beat favourite CATAPULT an easy five lengths here a week ago off a mark of 48 and has a 5lb penalty today, an impost that looks very manageable. Catapult is 4lb better off but that doesn’t seem enough to reverse the placings. Lewis Edmunds is back on board Queen of Kalahari and he and Eyre are four from 31 when combining here.
AWA BOMBA is another who will benefit from returning to the track. Lightly raced with just nine outings, he performed well at Kempton a month ago when three lengths behind Chil Chil and that horse has romped home again since, before running a close third at Kempton carrying 12lbs more. Awa Bomba won his only contest here at Southwell when beating eight others over course and distance back in March. He goes off the same mark as when beaten by Chil Chil and is a live danger. There is a little bit of money for BENGALI BOYS but although his trainer Tony Carroll is in top form with five winners from 33 runners in the last fortnight, the horse hasn’t won for two years and was ninth of 11 on his only try here. The queen looks worth waiting for to rule under Southwell’s new floodlights. G Lees
