Meade admits to Advertise July Cup fears
Trainer Martyn Meade admits Advertise is ‘going into unknown territory’ when he seeks Darley July Cup glory at Newmarket on Saturday.
Advertise looked in fine fettle when taking the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot last month and is set to go off as favourite for the big race this weekend. However, he will be taking on older horses for the first time and Meade admits he’s unsure how the three-year-old will react. He said: ‘Three-year-olds do have a good record in this, but it is a tough ask, by far the toughest race of his career so far. He’s going into unknown territory, taking on the older horses.‘Some of the older ones can be in and out of form, but when they are on-song they take a bit of beating. It’s a big step we’ve got to take. ‘On balance we’ve just got to throw him in and hope he puts his best foot forward. He’s won on the track last year (in the July Stakes); he’s come on since then, so I hope he can pull it off. ‘ Advertise’s likely main rivals in the contest are Dream Of Dreams, Cape Byron, Fairyland and Ten Sovereigns although in an extensive, quality field the likes of Limato, Brando and Pretty Pollyanna are also dangerous.
