Van Dyck claims Derby glory
Trainer Aidan O’Brien claimed a record-equalling seventh Derby success as Anthony Van Dyck beat Madhmoon by half a length at Epsom.
The Galileo colt beat 12 rivals to land the year’s fourth Classic, with O’Brien saddling five of the first six home in the prestigious race. Seamie Heffernan bided his time on board the 13/2 chance and had plenty of work to do inside the final quarter-mile. Favourite Sir Dragonet and Madhmoon were battling it out in front but Anthony Dan Dyck proved the strongest of all as the line approached to land the spoils. Kevin Prendergast’s Madhmoon held on for second, with Japan only a nose behind in third. After the race, O’Brien was understandably delighted and paid tribute to his staff. ‘It’s incredible; I’m so privileged to be part of the team,’ the Irish handler told ITV Racing. ‘There are so many people involved that I would like to thank. ‘These races are so competitive and so tough. I’m so privileged, delightful and grateful to the team.’
