Roaring Lion lined up for Cracksman clash

Romanised set for Queen Anne outing

Roaring Lion’s connections are hoping that he will go head-to-head in a mouthwatering clash with stablemate Cracksman at Ascot.

The John Gosden-trained three-year-old has enjoyed an excellent campaign having wrapped up a Group One hat-trick with victories in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown, the Juddmonte International at York and the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown.

Roaring Lion is now pencilled in for the Qipco Champion Stakes at Ascot on October 20 and there is still a chance that fellow Gosden-trained four-year-old, Cracksman could also be in the line-up.

A decision has yet to be made on whether the winner of the Champions Day race 12 months ago will return to Ascot or instead feature at this weekend’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

However, David Redvers, racing manager for Roaring Lion’s owners Qatar Racing is hoping the pair will meet at Ascot.

He said: ‘He’s [Cracksman] last year’s champion – and while it’s not been plain sailing for him this year, it’s coming to his time of the year.

‘To see those two square up would be fascinating, potentially explosive.

It’s what British Champions Day is all about, and what it is there for.’
