Alpha in good shape ahead of Longchamp charge
Trainer Bryan Smart is confident of Alpha Delphini’s chances ahead of next week’s Qatar Prix de l’Abbaye at Longchamp.
The seven-year-old will aim for victory in one of the most coveted races in France on Sunday week and the gelding is in good form ahead of the European trip, following a victory at York last time out.Smart’s charge landed the five-furlong Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes, beating Mabs Cross by a nose, and connections are confident of witnessing another win at Longchamp on October 7.
Alpha Delphini, who is looking to emulate his half-brother Tangerine Trees in winning the 5f dash, is being tipped for a strong performance by his trainer.
‘Graham Lee rode him a piece of work on Friday and we’re all happy with him.
He’s in good order,’ Smart said. ‘He’ll travel out there next week and hopefully he’ll run really well.
‘It would be special if he could match his brother, but at least he’s going with a Group One under his belt. That’s the good thing, he’s already done it.
‘If he could go and win the Abbaye like his brother did, it would be a fantastic feat.’
