Al Boum Photo confirmed for Punchestown Gold Cup
Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Al Boum Photo will take on seven rivals in Wednesday’s Punchestown Gold Cup.
The seven-year-old provided trainer Willie Mullins with his first ever victory in last month’s blue riband race at Prestbury Park and he will now be hoping to follow that success up with another win in the feature event of day two of this year’s Punchestown Festival. Al Boum Photo’s biggest rivals for overall glory on Wednesday are likely to come from his own yard, as Mullins has also declared Kemboy and Bellshill for the race. Kemboy fell at the first fence in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, but bounced back from that disappointment with a dominant victory in the Betway Bowl at Aintree earlier this month, while Bellshill is the Punchestown Gold Cup defending champion following his victory last year. Henry de Bromhead also has multiple runners in Wednesday’s race, with Ryanair Chase fourth Monalee and Sub Lieutenant both having been declared, while Gordon Elliott’s The Storyteller and Noel Meade’s Snow Falcon are set to run just nine days after competing in the Grade Two Devenish Chase at Fairyhouse. The line-up is completed by Brian Ellison’s Definitly Red, who like Kemboy, also failed to finish the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
