Elliott happy with Samcro progress

Trainer Gordon Elliott says Samcro is in good shape as connections ponder a return date for the chestnut gelding.

After a fantastic victory in the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle at the 2018 Cheltenham Festival, Irish handler Elliott made the decision to delay Samcro’s switch to fences until next season and huge things were expected.

However, the seven-year-old fell at Punchestown in April last year before failing to land any of his next three outings at Down Royal, Newcastle and Leopardstown.

It was confirmed the gelding was suffering from a lung infection, contributing to the disappointing displays, but Elliott is now happy with Samcro’s fitness as a possible return draws closer.

‘We’ve just gone steadily with Samcro over the last couple of months.

He has missed Cheltenham and Aintree, but he’s in good shape and going well at home,’ he was quoted as saying by www.

independent.ie.

‘So there’s a chance we could see him before the end of the season.

We’ll just see how he is over the next week and then make a decision on where to go with him or just leave him be to go chasing next season.’
