Condon eyes National Stakes with Indices

Curragh return planned for talented juvenile.

Ken Condon believes Laws Of Indices will benefit from a step up in trip and has the Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes in mind for the smart youngster.

The County Kildare-based trainer is eyeing the Group One over seven furlongs at the Curragh next month after the son of Power ran on well to snatch fourth place in the Phoenix Stakes there on Sunday.

Laws Of Indices had beaten the winner Lucky Vega when causing a 66-1 upset in the Group Two Railway Stakes, also over six furlongs at the Curragh, last month.

“He just missed the kick -he fluffed his lines at the start a little bit,” said Condon.

“It’s difficult then, especially in a Group One six-furlong race where those horses keep rolling along and they don’t come back to you.

“I thought in the circumstances he ran very well and came out of the race with a lot of credit.

“He finished it out particularly well, and he’s going to step up in trip now. I think seven (furlongs) will be fine, and he’s a horse that doesn’t seem to be ground dependent.

“He handles slow ground as well, and it’s nice having that going into the autumn. It keeps all options open.”

That programme is due to begin with a return to the Curragh on September 13.

Condon added: “We’ll probably run in the National Stakes next, and he will probably run twice more this season.

“It will be the National Stakes, (at a track) where obviously he performed with credit the other day and in the Railway Stakes.

“We’ll see how we go there, but we’re thinking the (Prix Jean-Luc) Lagardere. There is also the Criterium (International) in late October, so it could be one of those two.”
