Appleby and Buick strike again at Newmarket

In-form duo take opening event with Eastern World.

Eastern World continued the hot streak of trainer Charlie Appleby and jockey William Buick at Newmarket with success at the third attempt in the Betway Maiden Stakes.

Having teamed up to claim a four-timer at the track 24 hours earlier, the pair struck again with their only runner on the card in the mile contest.

Finishing second on both of his previous starts the Dubawi colt, who is a half brother to multiple Group One winner Thunder Snow, had no problem justifying his 8-13 price tag running out a two-length winner from Lawahed.

Appleby said: “He put up two nice performances before coming here today and we had confidence coming into it.

“The ground was quick enough out there for him. A step up in trip will hopefully see more improvement again.

“We’ve not really made a plan as the plan was to get today out of the way. If he comes out of this well, we will look at a mile-and-a-quarter handicap somewhere along the line.”

Georgia Dobie can now boast a Rowley Mile winner on her CV after Gin Palace demonstrated the best of his battling abilities in the Betway Casino Handicap.

After making a triumphant return to action at Newbury earlier this month, the Eve Johnson Houghton-trained four-year-old followed up with a tenacious success in the mile affair.

Looking booked for a place after being passed by eventual runner-up Ambassadorial late on, the gelded son of Swiss Spirit rallied gamely to get up close to the line to score by a neck.

Dobie said: “He is really tough. He strengthened a lot over the winter. He had a little break but he has come back stronger this year. That is the second race he has won this year and I think he has more to give. He is very genuine and he goes through small gaps. He will go up a few for that, but he is still lightly raced.

“It got a bit tight on the rail and I thought I might get beat, but once I found room I thought he might just get there.”

Tom Tate celebrated a rare winner at the track as Equiano Springs defied top weight to land the #betyourway At Betway Handicap.

The gelded son of Equiano made it two wins from as many appearances at the course when showing a good turn of foot in the six-furlong prize to defeat the Dobie-ridden Tin Hat by half a length.

Tate said of the 4-1 winner: “He does like it here. He likes the fast ground as he is useless on soft. It is so far so good, but these sprinters are a law unto themselves.

“The good pace to aim at suited him. He had everything that he wanted today.”
