Young Rascal fails to fire in Sydney Cup mission

First attempt at two miles ends in defeat.

British raider Young Rascal finished out of the places in the Schweppes Sydney Cup at Randwick on Saturday.

The William Haggas-trained five-year-old was well fancied on his first attempt at two miles after winning a Group Three on his Australian bow last month.

Young Rascal was in front turning into the straight in the Group One heat, but Tom Marquand was really starting to get to work.

The Intello gelding could not find much of a response though and dropped away as Etah James, trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, grabbed the glory under Glen Boss.

The Chosen One finished a narrow second with ex-Brian Meehan runner Raheen House back in third. Young Rascal was seventh.

Winning connections had earlier taken the Group Two Heineken 3 Percy Sykes Stakes with Away Game while Boss also triumphed in the Group One Star Australian Oaks aboard James Cummings’ Colette.
