Buick encouraged by latest Roy win

William Buick says Barney Roy's victory at Meydan on Saturday was another fine showing by his 'quite exuberant' mount.

The six-year-old seems to have lost none of his pace after retiring in 2017 and returning after failing as a stallion, notably winning the Prix de Montretout at Longchamp in May 2019.

Since then he has enjoyed two wins at Meydan, most recently on Saturday as he took the Jebel Hatta by a length-and-a-three-quarters from Magic Lily.

That result has seen his odds slashed for the Dubai Turf later this month and Buick was encouraged by his performance.

With his World Cup run providing a return to Meydan, the jockey says the signs are encouraging for another strong showing.

‘We’re very happy with it,’ said Buick.

‘He had a tricky draw in 12 so we had to ride him the way we did.

Although there were a few horses in the race that had a little chance, from the position we were in, we still had to pass them all.

‘He travelled very strongly, I brought him out early in the straight and, when he picked up, he settled the race quite quickly.

He’s got a huge cruising speed and loves a flat track like Meydan.

When he’s out in the open air and running he’s quite exuberant.’
