Treble delight for Marquand at Chelmsford
In-form rider maintains hot streak.
Tom Marquand continued his hot streak in the saddle since returning from a spell riding in Australia at the end of last month with a treble at Chelmsford City. Having celebrated an across-the-card four-timer on Wednesday, the 21-year-old took the riding plaudits once again to make it seven winners from his last 12 rides. Despite Marquand coming in for plenty of praise, he was quick to thank his agent Sashi Righton for securing the opportunities he has been given since being back in Britain. Marquand said: “I felt last year after coming back from Australia that I was riding well and felt good. “I have felt good again since coming back this year and it is all going well at the moment. “A large element all these winners is about getting on the right horses and that is down to my agent Sash.”Marquand hopes his recent roll will continue when he makes a flying visit to Meydan to ride the William Haggas-trained Pablo Escobarr in the Group Two Dubai City of Gold on Super Saturday. He added: “I’m really looking forward to riding Pablo Escobarr. It’s a tough race with Defoe in there, but he ran a huge race last time. If it all goes to plan and he puts in another big performance he should be right there.” Getting the ball rolling for Marquand was the Tony Caroll-trained Telekinetic (7-2), who held off the rallying N Over J by a neck in the toteplacepot First Bet Of The Day Classified Stakes. Marquand said: “I only pressed the button in the last three-quarters of a furlong and she won pretty comfortably in the end. “She looks to stay a good bit further and that mile and a quarter would be sharp enough.” Tomshalfbrother appeared to appreciate the step to six furlongs for the first time as he formed the middle leg of Marquand’s haul when prevailing by a length and a half in the Peter Andre Ladies’ Day Handicap. Marquand said of the Robert Cowell-trained 6-1 winner: “Stepping up to six furlongs seemed to suit him and he relaxed well off a decent enough pace. He could maybe get a bit further on the all-weather.” Royal Dynasty (7-1) made it two wins from as many outings under Marquand since her switch to Mohamed Moubarak to complete his three-timer when gamely holding on by a short head in the New tote Handicap. Marquand said: “I won on her first run for Mohamed Moubarak at Lingfield and she showed plenty of boot that day. To be fair I thought I was beat, but she stuck her neck out well.” Martin Dwyer made a quick appearance at the Essex track before dashing off to the Racing TV studio and steered the John Gosden-trained Lake Lucerne (3-1) to glory in the Good Friday Spring Country Fair Maiden Fillies’ Stakes. The Derby-winning rider said: “She is a well-bred filly that on her first start was very green over a mile. Mr Gosden’s often come on for a run and they told me this trip would help her. “I rode her like she would stay the trip and in time she will get a bit further.” Colwood (7-1) could be in line for a quick reappearance at Southwell on Sunday after making all to take the tote is Back Handicap by half a length. Winning trainer Robert Eddery said: “He is an honest horse that tries his heart out. If you looked at his form it was as good as anything else in the race. “He is in at Southwell on Sunday and if he comes out of this well he could go there.”
