Stalls incident leads to lengthy delay at Chelmsford
Bad At Bay received extensive treatment after becoming upset before start of second race.
Racing at Chelmsford on Saturday evening was significantly delayed following an incident at the start before the second race on the card. The Ivan Furtado-trained newcomer Bad At Bay banged his head in the stalls prior to the Bet toteexacta At totesport.com Novice Stakes, which was due off at 5.15, and received lengthy treatment. Jockey Jason Hart was unhurt. The other runners were unloaded and eventually returned to the paddock, before it was announced the start for the race would be moved 30 yards forward and started by flag rather than stalls, with the seven-furlong affair eventually under way some 45 minutes later than scheduled. The start was moved to enable veterinary staff to continue working with Bad At Bay, who had carefully been extricated from the stalls. Clerk of the course Andy Waitt was able to report before the 6.15 race went off at 6.55: “He’s up, the vets are still working with him – he was extremely groggy and they are not rushing anything. “They will wait until he is stable and as soon as he is stable he will be taken back to the stables in the horse ambulance or will be very carefully walked back.”
